It is stranger than fiction and worst than a horror movie. Harder to believe than anything presented by Ripley. Medellin was, not so long ago, a provincial capital in the Colombian Andes, a large town of hard-working, conservative, religious folk. The native returns after years away and simply describes what he sees, in the new language of the street, spoken by the teenage hit men devoted to their mothers and to the Virgin. Description in Spanish: ''La virgen de los sicarios'' es una descarnada parodia de la violencia que afecto a Medellin durante el auge del cartel dirigido por Pablo Escobar. Aqui, Vallejo se representa como un anciano homosexual de conservadoras costumbres y de espiritu elitista que se dedica a la gramatica y que regresa a su ciudad natal despues de largos anos de exilio en busca de amantes adolescentes y en espera de la muerte. Con humor caustico describe la ciudad y sus habitantes, nada escapa a su afan desacralizador y a su mirada critica. El dominio del lenguaje oral y callejero le permite recrear certeramente la grotesca y desmesurada violencia y logra conmover al lector y hacerle ver de nuevo la tremenda.
